Mixed Lot of 16 Storybook Dolls and 9 Stands from the 1940s and 1950s.When I was a child growing up in the 1940s and 1950s, my mother started a collection for me of (what she called) storybook dolls. I never played with the dolls; instead, they were on display in a glass-door bookcase in my bedroom where I admired them each day. Because I never played with them, their costumes are still in very good condition. Now, in my late 70s, I am ready to part with the dolls.
I continued to display the dolls in the same bookcase I had as a child until I made my last move eight years ago. Since then, they have been packed away in a box. I see now that most of the dolls should probably be restrung. It looks to me like they were originally strung with rubber bands. Some of the heads also need a dab of glue to bring the two halves together.
There are eight dolls 5 ¼ to 7 ½”. These are dolls that have eyes that open and close.
There are four dolls 5 ½ to 6 ½”. These dolls have eyes that are painted on.
There are four dolls that I displayed with my storybook dolls that fit into slightly different categories.
A cloth doll with the original tag of “Dufour Genova.” She is 6” tall and has braids piled on top of her head.
A Native American doll with long black braids and dressed in beaded white leather. One of her moccasins needs some repair. She is about 7” tall.
A Dutch girl with wooden shoes and cloth legs is 6 ½”.
The fourth doll is in an ethnic dress, but I am not sure which country she represents. She is 7 ½”.
Also included is an assortment of stands for the dolls.
